Winter Newsletter Series

This is the first installment of our new winter newsletter series. This series will cover a variety of topics that are related to the feeding of forage directly or management practices that can provide the basis for the successful feeding of forage.

Water Intake and Quality

Water is often overlooked as an important nutrient in cattle. Cattle need a good supply of high quality water for:

¨ Normal rumen fermentation and metabolism

¨ Proper flow of feed through the digestive tract

¨ Good nutrient absorption

¨ Blood and tissue needs

Water Consumption/Volume

Dairy cattle have a very high requirement for water. The percentage of moisture in the feed ration will determine the water consumption from drinking water. The requirement for water will not be changed it will just be provided by the feed source rather than directly consumed by the cow.
